Crossing the Boundaries
A century into its existence, cinema has entered another dynamic phase of development. On one hand this is largely due to technological progress. Other branches of art, such as literature and performance art, are starting to utilise the medium of film and video. At the same time increasingly cinematic forms are adopted by fields that make use of motion pictures – visually advanced video games, for example. Existing film genres are also undergoing changes, taking advantage of technological innovation. An example of such a process is the development of a documentary based on the Internet, the so-called interactive documentary. On the other hand, technological progress itself keeps democratising the medium of film and video, allowing for the creation of video footage by Internet- and smartphone-users, who keep track of modern world events through virtual media. This way, among other things, copies of popular music videos and video memes arise.
